Eastern Red Cedar Native American style flute

Pyro-art flutes

These flutes were a collaboration between myself, as flutemaker, and one of my best friends, Dario Ristic, whose incredible skills as an artist, pyrographer and NA flute player put him in a class of his own. For several years we talked about creating a series of flutes that combined traditional NA flute voices with pyrographic artwork that reflected these voices. The Spirit of a flute awakens during its making; as a master flute player, Dario (some of his recordings feature on the Hear the Flutes page) took each flute's Spirit and interpreted it into the most amazing pyro-art on the flute's body, using his immense talents from his highly successful profession as a tattooist in Stockholm, Sweden. Apart from the hours involved in crafting a beautiful sounding flute, each one took between 15 and 25 extra hours of technically complex artistic design and hand-done pyrography. The summation of this work are flutes that look and sound unique.

Western red cedar Buzzard flute

These are English Lime. From top to bottom, G, F# and F

At a technical level, these flutes have six holes in a straight line, so they can be played with either right or left hand as bottom hand. Each one is finished using a complex mix of natural oils that gives extra durability and toughness to the flute without impairing the voice or quality of sound.
