Little Owl flutes

These flutes are specially designed for children from about 6 years onwards; however, adults have found them very good to learn on, as they are 5-hole and the spacing of the holes, together with the indent for the resting finger, makes them very easy to play. These flutes are in the key of high A; a 6-hole version is available for adult learners (particularly useful for those learning via the R. Vames book and CD The Native American Flute - Understanding the Gift, available from Amazon).

Strangely, relatively few makers seem to cater for children. I say strangely because in this country, I've found that one of the largest markets is for children's flutes. This is probably something to do with the English school culture of making our offspring try to learn to play the recorder, an instrument which is both difficult for small fingers to get to grips with (too many holes and too long a barrel) and which, in novice or untutored hands, can be the source of the most horrendous sounds! The Little Owl flutes are far easier and much more melodic to play. The design has been extensively tested and refined courtesy of my two youngest children who have their own which they enjoy playing regularly (often at 6 o'clock in the morning!)

The flutes are meant to be fun. The totem blocks can be almost anything you want... so far there's been mice on cheese, boats, birds, bears, dolphins, rabbits and so on. The other favourite is the barrel figuring (done in safe acrylics) - pixies, fish, butterflies, seashells, kokopelli figures, you name it! The finishes used are all safety approved to US FDA standards.

For adult novice players I now make Little Owl flutes with six holes. The advantage over five holes is simply that the range of notes, and the fingering used to reach them, is greater with a six hole flute.

Please feel free to call or email if you would like any more details on the above flute range. And remember, this range can be customised to your own requirements.
